AI scribe vs writing notes yourself: what changes for a physio
Where note time goes, what studies measured and how to time it in your own clinic.

The short answer
An AI scribe listens to the consult and writes the note in your template. Typing from memory after the last patient is the part that goes. With 8 Scribe, the draft lands in your Nookal or Cliniko template and files in one tap, so you can move straight to the next patient.
Published studies of doctors measured 9.5% to 29% less note time. Physio clinics often also copy each note into the practice system by hand. That step goes too.
Where a physio’s note time goes
Most of the time is not the clinical thinking. It is turning a conversation into tidy template headings, drawing the body chart, then moving the text into the patient record.
- Writing the history from memory, often at the end of the day.
- Fitting it into the clinic’s template headings.
- Drawing symptom areas on a body chart.
- Copying or retyping the note into Nookal or Cliniko.
- Catching up on unfinished notes after hours.
What changes with an AI scribe
The table compares the same tasks done by hand and with 8 Scribe. Each row describes one step of an ordinary follow-up consult.
| Task | Writing notes yourself | With 8 Scribe |
|---|---|---|
| Capturing the history | Typed during the consult or recalled later | Recorded with the patient’s consent and drafted automatically |
| Template headings | Typed or pasted into each heading | Filled into your existing template |
| Body chart | Drawn by hand | Suggested from the consult, ready to adjust |
| Mixed-language consults | Translated in your head while typing | One English note, even when languages mix mid-sentence |
| Filing to Nookal or Cliniko | Copied or retyped into the patient record | Saved in one tap |
| After-hours notes | A common catch-up job | Draft ready when the consult ends |
What the research measured
A randomised trial of 238 doctors across 14 specialties at UCLA, published in NEJM AI in 2025, compared two AI scribes with usual care. One cut time in notes by 9.5%. The other showed no significant change. Both were linked with modest improvements in burnout measures.
An observational study at Capio in Sweden, published by the vendor Tandem Health, reported time per note falling from 6.7 to 4.7 minutes, a 29% drop.
Neither study measured physiotherapists or filing into a practice system. Treat the figures as a range, then time your own clinic.
What stays with you
You still ask for consent before recording, and you sign off the note as your clinical record. Ahpra’s guidance on AI in healthcare keeps both with the practitioner. The scribe removes the typing and transfer, not your clinical judgement.
Time it in one week
Pick five ordinary follow-ups. Time each note from the end of the consult to a filed record, first by hand, then with an AI scribe on fictional consults in your own template. Enter both times into the free 8 Scribe calculator to see the hours back each week and what that time is worth.
Common questions
Does an AI scribe replace writing notes?
It replaces the typing. The scribe drafts the note in your template from the consult, and you sign it off as your record.
How much time does an AI scribe save a physio?
Studies of doctors measured 9.5% to 29% less note time. Physio clinics that also copy notes into Nookal or Cliniko save that transfer step too. Time five consults in your own clinic for a real number.
Is an AI scribe worth it for a solo physio?
At A$39 a month, 8 Scribe pays for itself if it saves about half an hour a month at A$80 an hour. Use the calculator with your own numbers.
